CAM: Eye of the Storm

Eye of the Storm STEAM Fusion Activity

Opening Story: Imagine you’re part of a team of weather data gatherers on a mission to report the weather accurately. Gathering information is crucial for forecasting, and your task is to work together to answer questions and earn Drone Information Grabbers (D.I.G.) – special data points.

Challenge: Collect as many D.I.G. (Data Information Gatherer) balls as possible to answer questions for points. There are six different D.I.G. balls, each representing a way to gather data about an approaching storm.

Activity Type: Physical and Brain Game

Focus: Teamwork, collaboration, and communication. Plus, physical skills like stamina, balance, throwing, catching, and agility.

Group Size: Ideal for 10 to 12 middle to high school students.

Materials:

  • Balance Ball
  • Scoopers
  • Wiffle Balls

Description: You are a team of meteorologists, scientists, researchers, and reporters tasked with investigating and reporting on an approaching storm. Weather Scientist Roman Montagueo has invented Drone Information Grabbers (D.I.G.) to determine the type of storm.

Students will answer a max of 24 meteorology, climate change, or weather reporting questions. Each correct answer earns 100 points, and the number of D.I.G. balls they receive matches their correct answers.

One student becomes the “eye of the storm” on a balancing disk in the center of a circle formed by the rest of the students. This “eye” remains on the disk throughout the game.

The team has 6 D.I.G. balls to gather information from the eye of the storm. The purple D.I.G. starts and is passed clockwise using scoopers, not hands. The team must keep the “eye” balanced while passing the D.I.G. If the “eye” falls off, they get back on the balance ball to continue.

Rules:

  1. The “eye” must be on the balance ball during the D.I.G. rotation. The “eye” can step off the balance ball after catching and tossing the D.I.G.
    • Example 1: If the “eye” falls off before passing to the next person, they must reset. Example 2: If the “eye” loses balance right after catching, another student collects the D.I.G. but must pass it back to the starter for confirmation.
The D.I.G. can touch the ground, but it makes it harder to use the scooper. Gamers must stay in a circle to complete the pass. A passer can collect a D.I.G. from the “eye” but must return to the circle before passing to the next person.

True/False Questions: Prepare index cards with 24 questions (6 per group) for four groups of 10 gamers. These questions relate to meteorology and weather reporting.
